There are 3 qualifying examinations that you must pass to become a Driving Instructor.

Part 1 – Theory & Hazard perception (very similar to the theory test learner drivers do but to a higher standard)

You have 1 hour and 30 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions there is also 4 different categories.

– Road procedure
– Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
– Driving test, disabilities, and the law
– Publications and instructional techniques

You must get 85/100 to pass and also if you get 4 or more wrong in any one of the 4 sections you will not pass

Hazard Perception Part of the Test

You will watch 14 video clips each one containing a developing Hazard with one of the clips containing 2 developing Hazards.

You are required to click the mouse as soon as you have spotted the Hazard developing.
There is a window of opportunity where you can score 0-5 points depending on when you clicked.
The sooner you see it and click the higher the score but if you click outside the target window you will score 0. Also if you click too many times and the system picks up a pattern to your clicking it may think you are trying to cheat the system and give you a 0.

Part 2 test. The driving test (very similar to the test learner drivers have to sit but to a higher standard)

The part 2 test is just a Driving test.

It consists of 60-70 mins of Driving on a variety of different roads and traffic conditions. You are expected to produce a high standard of driving techniques and a high level of competency. You are allowed up to 6 driver faults but no serious faults. A serious fault is something that could have potentially caused some form of aggravation to another road user. You only get 3 attempts at the part 2 test.

Part 3 test…The test of instructional ability (the big one).

The part 3 test is where most individuals encounter the most challenges. This test asses your ability to teach and has had a major make over since January 2018.

The words “centred-learning” and “coaching” have been heavily associated with the new changes. More detailed information on this can be found in the Training section of this website
On the part 3 test the examiner will sit in the back of your car and assess you while you deliver a real life lesson with a learner driver.

It is extremely important that you make yourself familiar with the new marking system and that you can follow and fully understand the 17 competencies that are being assessed.

The test will last 1hr from start to finish so you will be out on the road with the learner for 45-50 mins to allow for goal setting at the start and reflection at the end of the test.

More detailed information on all aspects of parts 1, 2 and 3 cam be found on the government website.
