Part 1

In all honesty the only thing you really need is an app to pass your part 1 Test.
There are various apps available for ADI part 1 Training and you will just need to make yourself familiar with this. One I would recommend is Trainee ADI UK Theory Test by Imagitech Ltd. They also do a hazard perception app too and it’s cheaper to buy as a bundle. I have had various students in the passed use this and they said it was much more beneficial than being bogged down with lengthy course work.

You can work your way through the apps in your own time and whenever you feel ready to do so you can go on and book your part 1 test.

You must pass both theory and the hazard perception aspect at the same time. Once you pass you will be given a certificate No and you then use this to go onto booking your part 2.

Part 2

Part 2 is based on 10hrs of in-car Driver training on a 1-1 basis. Generally 5 x 2hr sessions but as always this can be adapted to suit each individuals needs ….. we ask the candidate to reflect on their own driving standard and see if they themselves can identify any habitats they are aware of or any particular areas which they feel they may needs some development. Form there we see what level their driving is at and put a plan together on how we can improve and develop their skills to not just meet the standard requirement but also we’ll exceed the standard. we don’t just settle for good. We are always striving to make things “REALLY GOO! This also begins setting the bar for your part 3 Training.

Part 3

This is where things become a little more challenging for individuals. As a driver parts 1 and 2 and not anything new to you, You just have to raise things to a higher standard. However Part 3 is usually the new bit as you may not have any previous experience on teaching/coaching.
Not that you need or require any previous experience but this is where the “New” aspect comes in.

Part 3 has had a considerable makeover in January 2018 so now the examiner sits in the back of your car and assess you on delivering a real life lesson with a learner driver. Where previous it was role-play and the examiner pretended to be a learner driver. The new set up is much better as you are dealing with a real learner not some one pretending to be one so it is much more real.

The main challenge we have with the new part 3 set up is “how do we get the PDI experience in teaching/coaching real learners??? And the answer is….. there are a few different options.

The first thing we do is dedicate 10hrs(approx depending on each individual) on how to keep your car safe. This covers things like verbal or practical intervention by means of using the dual controls for example also how to give clear and timely directions and correct terminology. Other things would be being able to identify errors in driving procedure and also being able to put in a plan of action to correct these errors and involving the learner in this process. Once you have a good grasp of these fundamental foundational skills we can begin to put a plan together on how we further develop your skills and what options you have to start dealing with real learners.

The most effective option is to apply for a trainee licence… you can get a trainee licence for 6 months with allows you to start doing the job as a Driving Instructor while still training. It is not always a feasible option as individuals may have other work commitments but it is most definitely the most effective option.

If a trainee licence is not an option to you. Other options are to teach learners for free. Possibly a relative or a friend. The idea is that you begin to build on the experience of dealing with real learner drivers. This is a vital commodity for being able to pass your part 3 exam and also being able to reflect on each lesson you do and correspond it to the part 3 (standards check) marking form.

Which ever options you choose there will always be some financial outlay to consider and each individual will go about things differently to suit their needs and further discussions can be had nearer this time to help you find the right option for you.

From there further Training is then done by the trainer (me) supervising and sitting in on various lessons that you do with your learners. A little bit like shadowing. We continue to asses and reflect on the lessons that I sit in on and set further plans on how it could have been improved and what you may do differently next time.

The total amount of Training at part 3 will differ greatly for each individual, but as a ball park figure, we work around 40hrs but this could be less or more depending on each individual.
